This could have been a simple billing error.
AOL had cancellation scams down. I cancelled them in July. For 6 months, they continued to charge me and I kept fighting the charges. Finally, threatened a lawsuit and they suddenly were able to get the cancellation through. But then they told me that I had a "grace period" and could access my AOL email during the next 60 days.
Good thing I read the fine print - as soon as you opened your email during the "grace period", they would reactivate your account and start billing you again. Funny she never mentioned that part...
I then got my card replaced and never use a company's "auto pay" - everything goes through my bank and is under my control.
Oh, about a year after my fight with AOL, they had the class action lawsuit. If I remember right, I got something like 50 cents.
