It's still a coax cable from the dish to the receiver which is no big deal to do yourself. RCA connections are for old TVs, newer use optical and HDMI. New TVs are cheap. A portable antenna on a tripod is about $150 and a learning curve. You can take anything from the house.

But yes, if you want an automatic HD on the roof, and internal wiring, and pay someone to do it, it'll cost you. Your friend definitely did it the expensive way and likely doesn't know he can take equipment from the house. DTV doesn't know where you are.
