You're comments are absolutely correct. Old customers get screwed and new customers get the discounts. We switched about 3 months ago from Direct to DISH. A 3rd party company did the switch. The sales rep explained exactly what you described above. So, after 4 years with Direct and higher and higher costs and less and less programming, we switched without hesitation.
We ended up with the dual receiver for the house, which actually controls 3 rooms. Bedroom and Family room are independent of each other. The bathroom is piggy-packed off the bedroom. Whatever is on at the bedroom is on at the bathroom.
The other 2 receivers are just the single receivers we had put in 2 different bedrooms. But the rep sold us a tripod for the camper and a second satellite dish with instructions how to set-up the second satellite dish and use it in the camper. We use one of the receivers in the bedroom for the camper and if we have company we put it back in the bed room. We decided we use the camper a LOT more than we use the guest bedroom, so that receiver pretty much, stays in the camper now.
The only down-side is, if we travel outside our geographical "home" area, we loose the local (Indianapolis) stations. But, everything else works just fine!
FYI, Direct TV for the absolute BASIC after being with them for 4 years, 2 basic - old technology receivers, no frills programming ... monthly ... $100. Yea, that was stripped own to bare bones.
DISH TV, new customer, latest technology, new receivers ... 3 receivers at that, including a dual receiver ... 3 months free all movie channels, locked in price for 2 years ... $39 a month! And we have the second satellite dish and tripod we purchased flat out.
The secret to the whole thing ... switch from one company to the other every 2 years so you are always considered a "new" customer and you'll get the lower (special) rates. I don't have any loyalties to either company. I go with the money! Money talks! That's the important thing.
