Most residential installations use a SWM8 switch which can handle 8 tuners, but larger for larger installations I know a SWM16 box exists. I believe this is what is used for apartments, condos, etc. Multiplexing of satellite data is not new, Dish Network has been installing multiplex switches in homes for years. I'm not sure exactly what DirecTV did to come up with the SWM concept (as opposed to the more traditional approach), but I suspect that the switches can be "ganged" just as they can be with standard multiplexing.
