Antennas 101, DirecTV version:
Dome and cube antennas such as teh Winegard Pathfinder or any of the domes can pick up one satellite at a time and that is in the band (KU I think) that DirecTV uses for SD,,, The HD stations are in a different frequency band and this antenna can not, under any conditions receive it, or those stations.
DirecHDTV uses 3 satellites, (one at a time) in TWO different bands (KA and KU) and thus you need a stationary DISH type antenna, it can be a DirectHDTV "Disaster Kit" or you can get an automatic dish roof mount (The most expensive) depending on how much work you want to do.
You are going to spend what, Over a thousand dollars a year for Television and you complain about the cost of the antenna? I will admit to spending around 150 dollars upgrading my Rooftop Over The air antenna (Added wingman, Added Sensar Pro, and a bunch of coax and a couple splitters inside the RV to route it) My annual subscription cost is, I think 12 dollars (Program guide service I use).
