This problem has existed from the beginning. I bought a Tailgater last year (replaced it with a DirecTV Trav'ler this year). I did a lot of homework and learned that unless someone (not Dish) can connect the receiver to an existing account and then update the software, an out-of-the-box receiver won't work.
You can get a Tailgater with a preprogrammed receiver. I bought mine on Amazon, and the seller did the preprogramming. Good thing. I don't subscribe to Dish at home.
This is one case where you can't really blame CW. It is a Dish issue. They should have designed their software to automatically update for the Tailgater when the receiver senses it is connected.
Next time, consider DireTV.
