I just called DISH since I'm a customer. The agent explained that we may loose some of our local stations. They are still attempting to negotiate. She said they will be sending notices to us (as customers) with the details. We will not loose the upper channels, like SciFi, HGTV, ect.
In a way, I can understand the problem. Local stations (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX) are free over-the-air on digital now, Looking at it from their point of view, why should they have to pay anything when they already provide their programming free to the public.
The only thing we as customers will looses, is the ability to get local stations outside our own viewing areas. I understand therir point.
Now, don't misunderstand me here. In a way, I am defending the local stations if they refuse to play ball and decide to withdraw from DISH.
Quite frankly, HOWEVER, my wife and I have been dissatisfied with Cable, Direct, and Dish for some time now. Actually, there's nothing but garbage and nothing but massive commercials. We don't pay for any premium channels, and we are not sports enthuasiests at all.
We've been watching over-the-air television a lot in the last several months and not even turning on the DISH.
So, if they are unable to reach a contract agreement, and they give us the option to cancel our contract, I think we're going to cancel DISH. We've been talking about canceling, but locked into the contract. If they give us an "out", I'm pretty sure we'll use this opportunit to take it!
And to think, I got a brand new satalite finder for Christmas and haven't even taken it out of the box yet because it's been so stinking cold to set it up!
I'm OK with local channels wherever we're camping. The Internet on our phones keeps us in-tune with the local television stations and news when we're out of our local area. We've been using this instead for some time too.
I just hope we can use this opportunithy to "get out" of the contract now.
