DISH TV payment question....

My wife and I have been thinking about buying the Tailgater setup from DISH to use while camping.

We are not DISH customers, so this would be our only account with them.

I talked to two account reps today and I received a different answer from both of them, and am not sure they understand my question, so I thought I would ask here.

The plan we are looking at is basically $30.00 per month. We only camp about 3-4 days each month, and sometimes not even that much.

I asked what would happen if we paid the $30.00 monthly fee, used it for 4 days, and then "suspended" the service. One Rep told me I would have a $26.00 credit to be used on my next camping trip when I wanted it turned back on.

The second Rep told me the credit would expire at the end of 30 days, and I would need to pay the $30.00 again when we went on our next camping trip.

Does anybody here have any real life experience with a situation like this? I would not mind at all buying the entire setup and paying "as I go", so to speak, but I do not want to pay $30.00 per month for TV that will only be view 3-4 days each month.

Also looking for other options if anybody has better ideas.

Thanks,

Jerry

  • Have had Dish For My RV for two years. It is a 30 day, pay as you go service. That means that the minimum period you can activate is 30 days. That 30 days is a set period. Your start day of the 30 days (month) is always the same. Mine is 16-15th of every month. If I let it laps, there are no fees. When I restart it there are no start up fees. If I start it on the 13th of August, I will pay for the 14 of July through the 15th of Aug. If I restart if on 17th of July, I pay for the 14 of July through the 15th of Aug. Set payment periods.

The benefit is that if you do not use it from 16 of Sept to 15, you pay nothing.

You do need specific equipment, though.
  • N. S. E. W. Makes no difference. Just set it on the ground and it should locate the satellite.

Interesting. I usually point mine south and it does the same thing.
Actually I don't think it matters. I took the cover off just to see how it works (a fault since early childhood). When powered up the internal dish makes a full rotation. Then it moves back toward a generally southern direction until it hits the direction of the satellites, bumping back and forth a few times to get the strongest signal. Then it begins to adjust the tilt (elevation) again bumping up/down a little at a time until it gets the strongest signal. Then it stops moving.
I think the bumping may also be it homing in on all three satellites.
  • We have Dish at home and it is a $7/month add on and can be shut off the months we don't use it. Love the tailgaiter, hook up the coax, set the handle so it points North, set the correct state and it will come on in a few minutes. The box for the TT is half the size of the home one and the $30 is basic and about 100 chanels are just sales garbage.
  • You could try asking the question on the dish forum. I've had questions answered there in the past. http://www.highdefforum.com/dish-network-forum-19/
  • Others have reported that the first rep gave you the correct information. If you do nothing the service will expire but if you call and stop the service they will hold a credit on your account to be used at a later date.
I am not a customer so cannot confirm this but it has been reported on a few forums so I am speculating that this is correct.
  • I have a pay as you go account. You have 30 days of service use it or loose it.
I agree I don't want to pay for service I don't use however, I don't full time so I will never use a full months service. If I can get 2-3 weeks or even 2-3 weekends per month of use I'm OK.
Truth is I don't/won't use the RV an entire 30 days per month, But I'm Ok with paying/maintaining it for the entire month.

When I was using DIRECTV I already had an account for my home so I just took along a SAT RCVR from the bedroom and a spare dish and all was fine. This is all condoned by DIRECTV to do...

I am assuming DISH would do the same thing. Back then using DIRECTV you could go to standby only a couple times a year and could be up to 6 months.
