DISH vs DTV Anybody had both? Considering switching.

We are listing our big house and moving into a smaller one.

The new house needs sat installed.

We presently have Directv which Im fine with except for the cost.

Looking at DISH and they have a two year new customer deal- two years $49/mo with 190 channels, no DVR, HD, 1ST TV fees.

Seems too good to be true. What am I missing?

Plus I could buy a Vucube later on for the rv.
  • DISH is more RV friendlier then DTV.

We had both, DTV first and now DISH.

DTV will only switch local, service address, every few weeks.
DISH, will do every day if requested. I have learned to use the ON_Line Chat service for this.

Also, DTV, you have to be careful in requesting a service address change, as not all cities have a contract in place to broadcast both SD & HD.

Susan bought me a used WineGuard SK1000, took me about an hour to install and we now have the Hopper and Joey.

I have learned to read the SPOT BEAM maps, this way I do not need to change service address all the time. Example would be Denver, CO. This spot beam reaches into OK south and Southern part of SD.

So, I would advise you to first lay out want you want. SD or HD, DVR - into sports (NFL Network) and so on. Then you can decide what you will need.
  • I've had both, and even had Brighthouse (cable). We left Brighthouse behind because we moved to a spot with NO cable. Tried Direct-TV first. After the first year, prices went up and up and up. We fought with them to keep prices down. We had opportunity to switch to Dish-TV. We did. Same thing. After the first initial year, up and up and up it went. We just got sick and tired of having to battle (both) companies, and canceled everything! We've been much happier ever since. It sounds like a good deal, but when the initial low-cost time period is over ... look out!

What is the cost after 2 years?

It increases to the over priced amount like DTV but you can drop service or renegotiate or maybe get a two year deal with DTV.

We have friends that have DTV at their house and do the pay as you go for their rv so they can use a Vucube but Im too cheap for that.

haha - Thats when you drop the DISH for a sign-up deal with DIRECTV again... Might get another good deal for two more years???

We did that a couple of rounds one time then just finally bit the bullet and stayed with DirecTV back then.

Then when the NATL TV networks came out with Digital TV from the local towns we just dropped SAT TV altogether and went with the digital TV from the local towns... Being the Natl TV was digital HDTV mode the picture was much better than the standard SAT TV anyway... Haven't missed too much TV...

It's all about what you want to pay I reckon...

  • We have learned to switch back and forth every two years - for the"new" customer rate each time. Two year contracts for each. And yes the rate does go up for the second year but just watch out for add-ons. Works for us.
