That really sucks to lose your email like that. Free things don't come with a guarantee though. I've used my @yahoo account for going on 12 years. I use mostly for junk mail and sites that may spam me. If it gets nuked I won't be missing much though.
For everyone else I own my own domain so that our whole family has an email account that I'm in control of not some behemoth company that doesn't care about me. Runs about $35/year.
