Download speed slow on one laptop
I have three laptops. This newest HP, running Windows 10, is running download speeds from 3 to 5 Mb/s. The other two laptops run around 90Mb/s. This is the newest of the three and one of the old ones ...

The modem translates between the outside cable or fiber and internal network. The router shares/distributes the network with all of the devices that use it. The router converts a wide area network (WAN) into a local area network (LAN).
Sometimes a modem has the router built it. If there are multiple cat5 jacks and/or wireless antennas on the modem it’s built in.
