As Mr. Wizard noted, I was uploading to a link someone sent me so I needed to install their software. The spam I was referring to was from Dropbox. Daily reminders to "complete my installation" and other messages. I finally just disabled it.

Clearly not spam.
Had you finished the install it would have stoped reminding you.
I didn't want to have a product for which I have little use also sending 80 Meg files to my phone and tablet, which is what "completing the install" wanted to do. I found their followup to intrusive and apparently I am not alone. If you're happy with the product that's great.

Next time you need to move a large file, consider setting up a extra Gmail addy.. Gmail automatically gives you FREE online storage called GOOGLE DRIVE which is "shared" between the Gmail emails and your own online files..
No need to install any Apps or software to take advantage of the free online storage and Gmail does not "bother" you will emails or other junk mail..
As long as you are "logged into" the Gmail you have access to that drive also..
I found that out a few years ago when my DD needed an disposable email account for several High School classes..
Google drive allows you to have private online storage and public storage.. The public storage allows you to create and copy a link from the file(s) that you placed in the online drive..
You then can paste that link into a email and send that to who ever you need to send it to.
