Unfortunately, if the DVDs are copy-protected then it is illegal to break the copy-protection to copy them regardless of the OP's intent.

However, I feel the odds of being prosecuted for breaking the copy-protection in order to copy DVDs I own to be so low that it is a non-issue so I will continue to copy my DVDs so that I can have much easier access to them. Each of us needs to make their own decision regarding this issue.

Thanks for mentioning that the tv does not need to be "smart" to show videos. I will check out the owners manual to see if my tv can show video from the usb.

Many smart TV's will play digital formats. there are still some TV's with built in DVD player.

There are multiple programs that will "backup" YOUR DVD's. Some are easy to use, some not so easy. The gold standard DVDFAB lost a lot of capabilities from the new US version of the program. Older version of the program still maintain capabilities.

There are numerous sites one could download shared (illegal) videos from.

Let me make a small point, The whole legal thing is concerning, I want to make it known that I am not into bootlegging dvd's or trying to steal anyones intellectual rights. All I am trying to do is transfer, legally bought, with my money, dvd's to be able to view in the privacy of my own home/rv and will not sell or even let anyone see the dvd's that i have transferred to my hard drive.

Though I don't actively work for them, I'm still technically an employee for one industry trade group that represents most of the major studios. So somewhat limited to what I can discuss. But I can tell you that they are aggressive in protecting their members intellectual rights, where they can. And work closely with the Justice Dept through their enforcement arm the FBI. Which is one reason when I visit a Goodwill for instance, and see what is obviously donated bootlegged DVDs displayed, I generally suggest that it may be a good idea to remove them. As another large thrift chain in my area was raided by the FBI and shutdown for 24 hours for selling such bootlegged material. Though granted, they may not have known what they were selling?

In any case, afaik, the open source "libdvdcss" has never been legally challenged, though considered illegal as it effectively circumvents digital rights management, covered under the DMCA. Unlike DeCSS which courts have deemed illegal as it relies on stolen(or borrowed) decryption keys.

Part of the problem lies with the industry itself for selecting such a weak protection system, the 40-bit encryption used in CSS. Using the power of today's average computer, libdvdcss is able to brute force decryption keys to find a working pair while the player software is loading the DVD.

There are some apps that claim to bypass the illegal issue by recording the active stream from the DVD itself. So not technically circumventing DMCA digital rights management mechanism directly? Assuming the actual player end is using legally licensed CSS keys, which may be another question altogether?

In practical terms, the bottom line may be whether the cost of enforcing content owners rights, is worth the benefit? Which may include increased media publicity. Different for someone who legally purchased the DVD, and making a backup copy? In contrast to those who effectively bootleg copies for profit, or make them available for free on the Net?

I have a 5 year old LG that is not smart and it will play video files from a device connected to the USB port. Check you manual and see if yours will play video.

The ultimate weapon for backing up DVD and Blu-Ray disks is DVDFab.

You may have to purchase an external USB drive if your computer does not have a built in drive, especially if you plan on doing Blu-Ray.

I purchased a very small Sony Blue Ray player at Best Buy for my TT. It's really nothing to have it in a cabinet and plug in the wires when needed.

No its the Lance squire lite 165, bottom of the line and a 1997 model, it didn't come with much of anything as far as options are concerned.
I will find a smallish as in small foot print dvd player, the trouble is that space for extras are limited.

One of the Roku boxes has a USB input connection. (Maybe Roku 3) The box connects to the TV with an hdmi cable. The box is small and you can connect your portable hard drive to it and then play video from the hard drive onto the TV - so you don't need a "smart tv".

Quest. Does your Lance have the built in CD / AM / FM, stereo? IF it does. You can replace it with a AM / FM / CD / DVD / player, and run the wire to the TV. No extra space needed
