I just use one of these with a couple of 100-foot RG cables and move it to where it works best...
Did this for several years until the NATL BROADCAST Network came out with Digital TV a few years back. Now we just use our BATWING antenna to pick up the HDTV signals from the local towns... They work great for us now... Don't have to bring along our SAT TV items anymore...

I have wondered about this myself. I can generally find something to watch OTA. Not my favorite show or tonites sporting event., but something entertaining. Some shows worse or older than others but always something. I stopped carrying my Satellite as well.
But for those of you that still carry a manual satellite dish. Do yourself a favor and go automatic! It's just more hassle free.
For me the manual satellite was too much hit or miss. Generally I was always able to get it done but sometimes it took lots of effort.
Skip the effort paet go automatic
I guess I don't see the relevance to these posts. The OP was not asking how you set yours up. I was going to try something like this but my RV moves around when we walk around inside and did not know how much that would affect the aim.
Also, I can buy a lot of beer to drink while setting the dish up with the money I didn't spend on the automatic dish.
The OP posted his idea which is neat. I would hope he posted to share his idea and receive feedback. Remember it is an open forum.
I did not know everyone reading it had to proclaim his idea was the best thing since sliced bread.
Overall the idea is limited. Unless the OP is always camping in an open field there will be obstacles blocking the line of site. Being bumper mounted low to the ground does not help seeing over obstacles.
Note the commercially made antennas are roof mounted for a reason.
Manual antennas are hard enough to aim without being fixed/bumper mounted.
In the end the automatics have come a long way and dropped in price. Manual set ups have become obsolete in my book simply because a bettor mousetrap has become available. Mounting a manual just reduces the ability to find a satellite.
Feel free to disagree if you like. I understand it is an open dialogue and everyone will not agree with me. But that's OK.
I don't expect total agreement.
I guess I was just looking from the point that some people will complain when threads go off topic. I use the manual setup and have never had an issue getting a signal. Whether you call it obsolete or not it doesn't matter, like you said.
