Yes, charging at to fast of a rate can cause a LI-Io battery to overheat and possibly explode. Put it on a BBQ - Duuu the same thing happens?? Really?
What many do not understand is a high voltage LI-Io battery pack can take out the full battery from the circuit, so a constant voltage charger like used in lead acid battery will not work well in a Li-Io application. So even a alternator can not work well, IF the charge controller for the Li-Io battery is not designed correctly. Once several of the batteries in a series pack have become full, then the input voltage to the pack must be reduced. (this applies to battery packs above 100 volts DC).
