As I sit here typing on my mid 2010 macbook with 4 gb of ram, I"m pondering my own experiences and can say this.
Not once in 8 years, 4 macs and a partridge in a pear tree have I ever had to rebuild a Mac for an update (major or minor).
That being said, my day job is IT and I spent the better part of the last 24 hours doing a bare metal restore for a non profit I volunteer for - having been hit by ransomware.
Windows has issues because MS doesn't control the hardware and all it takes it one angry electron and the whole world comes down. They can't write enough code to cover all the drivers from all the manufacturers.
If my wife's sewing machine software would run on a Mac, she'd only have one PC (a Mac) but because it only runs on windows, she has two machines.
I know VMWare or Parallels would allow me to install windows on a mac, but that' more work than it's worth.
Barney - turn off the updates. you can do it in a Mac as well as on a PC. I don't have the updates applied unless I have an issue or want an update.
