Is Starbucks free? Go into any Starbucks and connect and carefully read what the screen says. It's something like "Please be courteous and enjoy a beverage while you're using our wifi.." something like that. It's a *nice* way of saying this isn't totally wide open and free to the public. If that escapes anybody's comprehension then you're abusing the system.
And so what's wrong with the OP and others sitting in the parking lot using the "free wifi"? Bandwidth. Pretty soon you have 10 guys in the parking lot doing their business, downloading porn, watching movies.. whatever they want because, hey, it's "free." And that affects the service to the paying customers (the considerate people) inside. And then, as many businesses have done, they have to lock down the wifi and provide a key to paying customers.
What the OP is advocating is exactly why businesses lock down their wifi.
