Firewire on digital camcorder to laptop

I have a digital camcorder with a firewire output and want to download the video to my laptop computer to burn to DVD. The computer does not have a firewire port, a PCIe slot, or an expresscard slot.

What are my options?

Yeah, there are a number of posts on the internet that say the streaming of Firewire can easily overrun the packet mechanism used in USB. USB 1.0 would probably never work as it's way to slow. If it's the first implementation of Firewire (1394A) then it may work with USB 2.0 but there better not be anything else running on the USB chain. Later versions of Firewire (1394B) are twice as fast though and would probably overrun USB 2.0 easily. So I think you're right, you'd need to be using USB 3.0, but the problem with USB is it will slow down to the slowest device on the chain. So even if you have USB 3.0 if there's a USB 2.0 or 1.1 device plugged into that USB controller the entire chain will be downgraded.

  • how about a firewire to USB cable? do a google search.
