I saw on the news last night that flip phones are making somewhat of a comeback.
Does that mean that I can start wearing my bell bottoms again and using my brass, peace sign belt buckle too? - SteveAEExplorerSaving for retirement, yet a geek since even before I built my first HAM radio at about age 12, puts me a bit of a quandary. Yes, I would like one. But. Our two flip phones with Verizon (grandfathered plan), for ~ $55.00 per month just makes more sense ..... for us. The way I see it, it's all about priorities, and everyone needs to set their own.
Those that can afford a smart phone (or their own jet for that matter) should have one if they so choose. However, I would trust that they wouldn't then turn around and ask for financial assistance from those of us who are saving. And that folks is about as political as I should get here.
Steve - RoyFExplorerSince I'm one of the dinosaurs, let me point out that those guys were around for 200,000,000 years -- a pretty good run. My phone cost is $100 per year. For all the internet stuff, I use my laptop -- most RV parks have free wifi.
And, I'm in no danger of developing "text neck", something that I only recently learned about! - byrdr1Explorermy wife finally over the holiday got rid of her flip phone and joined the new millennium. She got herself a Samsung S5. I was helping her last night to get some apps and she was like " I like this". I like this finger never leaving the text box(slide texting) to type a text. She likes the way she can see the pictures she had on her old flip phone.

Nah, I think I'll stick to my dumb phone and spend my money on fuel.
Why do you think it has to be phone or fuel? Hubby and I spend about $130/month on our unlimited data smart phones. Among other things, we use them to stream video for movies or tv shows we want to watch. We do not have cable or satellite TV, and I think the price is comparable.
The ones in favor of the dumb phones are ones who have never gotten used to having the entire world of information in their handbag. When we're going down the road and see something interesting, I can Google for more information before we reach the exit. ;)
When hubby gets tired and says find a place to park, I can check RV Park Reviews, Passport America and Overnight RV Parking from the road.
What's that gun owners say about cold dead fingers? At least mine will be well manicures. :C - BumpyroadExplorer

I must say, I've yet to own a smartphone that is good for phone call quality. Miss that.
yep, there certainly is no good reason to make a phone good for phone calls.

X2 LMAO :B
Most, if not all, of the folks extolling the virtues of the old technology have never tried the new smart phones. Funny thing though, I have never met anyone who went back to their old phone after experiencing a smart phone .... hmmm. :h
It is pretty hard to go anywhere, including a lot of boon docking coast to coast where we don't have a decent cell signal (Verizon). The smart phones just keep getting better and no, the updates do not cost more money. Until you have owned one it is hard to imagine just how useful they are.
As always.... Opinions and YMMV
:C - rockhillmanorExplorerThe smart phone is good for TWO things......the size of the dialing pad. You can actually see it! AND. Your fingers actually fit on the key pads!
I bought an Iphone just for that. But when the bills started coming in ever increasing each month until it was over 100.00? I dumped it.
Went back to the microscopic flip phone and just couldn't take it.
Took the sim card out of the flip phone and stuck it in my retired iphone and voila!! I now can dial again without a magnifying glass AND all for 45.00 a month unlimited everything. Ahhh. - 2oldmanExplorer II

No better than a dumb phone if you don't have data reception.
How well do those smart phones work when there's no cell reception?
I just completed a trip from WA to IN, then south thru Nashville, AL, TX and AZ. I was never without Verizon service, and always 4g service.
If you have a sp, you need a carrier with good coverage, because your phone will be really stupid without it. - bob213ExplorerFlip phone works great for my needs. I used 7 minutes last month. That was getting directions from wife while backing into a camp space or storage. I may carry it with me but it's off. If I want to make a call I turn it on. Other than that, I don't want to talk on the phone.
