Free OTA streamer Locast adds two more cities

Locast.org, the non-profit that streams locals for free (donations requested) has now added Rapid City and Sioux Falls, SD to their other 9 cities. For Dish and DirecTV subscribers, a Locast app has been added to the current receivers. The website and app must detect that you're in the correct market area to use the service.

  • Hypothetically speaking, for educational purposes only, one could program Chrome or Firefox to report any location you want to a website.

  • Last I checked, Locast was not free. It did not work unless you paid the fee even though it promotes itself as free.Chuck

I use Locast regularly and have not yet paid them a dime. There is a short donation plea before the selected programming starts though.

I use the "Location Guard"extension in Chrome to set my location for Locast on my PC, and the "Fake GPS" app on my Android phone for Locast. I usually stream the phone to my FireTVstick for Locast viewing. I've tried VPN's on the Firestick, but the excessive buffering was too annoying.

There's nothing illegal about receiving an out of market TV station. People have done it for years with larger OTA antennas.
  • Receiving is one thing, digitally streaming is a whole nother can of worms.
  • I just tried this and it works great. I live in Minneapolis but installed the "Location Guard" extension. Makes it very easy to select any of the cities available. Thanks Dutch.

This is great. Now if I should miss the season finale of "The Bachelorette" I can catch it on the West coast feed. ;)

And that certainly makes the whole endeavor worthwhile, Tom! :)
  • Another thought comes to mind. I live in Minneapolis but I spend winters in Florida. I'm not much of a sports fan but I do like to watch the Vikings. Using Locast I'll be able to watch most of the games by selecting one of the cities where they are playing.
