Have been having problems with our Garmin Nuvi 2595LMT freezing and need to replace. One issue I have had with this model is that the directions are often given as "turn right onto John Doe Highway" ...

Like you, I think that the "logic" is flawed and often confusing.
The things should be "smart" enough to know that if you came INTO town on route XX and are LEAVING town on the same route XX, then it probably should be telling you to FOLLOW xx.....and not Main Street.
