they are still doing that, even though you download them from the servers to your PC, they already know what is in the emails you received
the difference is you are not viewing ads on the email webpage

And I'll add that all email services will likely scan your emails. They have to in order to detect spam and possible malware. The question is what do they with the scanned info? Some disclose they may use it for marketing? Others say the don't, though I would take it with a grain of salt as the user has no way of knowing? And we all know that user profile info has become exceedingly valuable?
You may think its safer to use your own domain email from a shared or dedicated server hosting company. But just note that the administrator of the service will have access to your site, and can read your email. So your info is not really any more private?
