Update on my query
After many hours on the net searching and numerous reboots to the router, contact with the ISP, I did a new install, same problem.
I found that when I ran Google through another search engine that the address was shown as "encrypted.google.com. so I used that as my homepage, on both Firefox and Internet explorer and it now loads perfectly on both browsers.
An interim fix, but I'm still looking. Thanks for all the suggestions that were posted.
