We didn't pay anywhere near $2k for our rugged radios & intercom in our CanAm. My wife and I talk comfortably all day on our rides, and our group calls out all the turns and stops even when our group stretches for miles. It's definitely a necessity for large group rides.
We also use a variety of radios for group communication on our off road motorcycle rides as well. Rugged radio's are reasonably inexpensive and more rugged than some of the similar ebay units. couple with a good helmet headset they sell and push to talk work great. And can be programmed for FRS, GMRS, MURS channels.
This type of setup has become real popular with the off road crowd in the last few years.
The rugged radio units go to those in the group needing a loaner, the favorite for the group are either Yuhasa or standard horizon (same company I think just different target markets) radios. Really take abuse, and also easy to program.
We usually use one of the MURS channels and that gives us a nice communication range. Couple that with tone coded squelch and they work well.
I'd say watching rugged radio sales, for $300 you could get a nice setup for two people from rugged radio including the radios and headsets.
Standard horizon/Yuasha is going to be about double that but a much more robust unit. Radios themselves are in the $200 range with a long whip antenna.
