I suppose the bean counters had this all figured out, sort of like my BIL told me when he flew for Northwest. they had a route, Fargo to billings or something like that that the bean counters wanted to drop because the traffic never increased. it never increased because the planes were filled to capacity and couldn't. :)

You are missing the point. They have deliveries in that area. They are not turning left simply to avoid a left turn. But to maximize the efficiency of the route. As an individual it makes no sense unless you have a reason to go that way. From a fuel standpoint you will burn more taking the long way. And from a safety standpoint I don't see it either. You are still crossing intersections where someone could run a red and on the road longer, statistically raising the odds of bad things.
