I have just picked up a modum from the ISP. In the process i also had to have the phone company sent a service person to get the junk running.
In the process the tech showed me that the ethernet card or whatever is not working in the desk top. Tried the lap top and it worked. The desk top is now running on wifi.
The modem has a USB port on it. I am wondering if i can just plug a USB in the back of the modem and the other end into the computer and thus have the modem hardwired to the computer.
I won't debunk what the service tech told you. . . I haven't seen your equipment along with little information you provided. You said it worked on the laptop. Did the tech use ethernet cable from the modem to PC?
Most ethernet cards (unless it is strictly used for wireless communication) come with ethernet ports. Since you are now using wifi, chances are the ethernet card is able to talk to the modem.
Your ethernet card is obviously dual function, meaning it can talk using hardwire or wireless.
If you have the ethernet cable, plug one end to the modem and the other end to the PC.
Go to the settings window > network connection > and look for option whether you want wireless or hardwire. If the hardwire shows active, select it and it will announce that you are now connected.
If it doesn't confirm that you are connected, then the ethernet card. is suspect.
Although I'm a certified Microsoft Network engineer, I haven't used Windows since I hang my hat a few years ago. . . so whatever shows on the screen may differ from the process I cited above.
I'm been using Linux, which in some ways, differ from Windoze (LOL) in terms of commands.
