Modem means MOdulator DEmodulator. It need not change digital data into sound (Digital data is already sound by the way, even if you can not hear it) in the case of Cable Modems the Modem modulates an RF carrier. Same as the Modulator stage of my 2-way radios. and the Demodulates a different RF carrier, same as the Detector (demodulator) stage in the aforementioned Radios. So it's still a modem.
Now to the O/P's question.. RTFM Type the name of the Cable modem, the model and the word MANUAL into Google and read it.. That USB port may work for data transfer, but not nearly as fast as a Cat-5 cable, or it may be for other uses such as flashing the Modem's firmware.
