When you hardwire the modem and network adapter, you basically "eliminate" one layer of the seven protocols necessary for two systems to communicate.
When...during setup you've chosen to communicate directly through the ethernet cable (hardwire) the modem or router will recognize this and the wireless path becomes inactive. . .even though your machine shows that WAP is available.
Wireless communicate through radio signals while hardwire communicate through electrical pulses. You cannot tap into an ethernet cable hoping you can intercept data being sent by one system to the other.
Every bit of data that comes in a packet has unique identity that is tagged (another layer of the OSI protocol) specifically intended for the client requesting it.
Radio signals can be easily intercepted by a topnotch hacker and could break the encryption.
