Has anyone switched to DirecTV lately?

We always had trouble getting a signal from Dish network while traveling around Florida in the winter. We are in the process of switching to DirecTV but are having problems. They say that their new satelite system is hard to connect to on our own. Has anyone switched to Directv lately and have the new system?
  • We use a Trac-Vision R6 in-motion dish which does not track the DirecTV high definition satellites. From time to time I need a new DirecTV TiVo receiver and find the best source of the older R-10 TiVo’s is Weaknees.com Using the Trac-vision in motion dish and DirecTV we have no problem with reception. Hope this helps.
  • The "new" SWM technology that doesn't work with the old system. We had diectV several years ago and it was easy to use. For some reason we switched to Dish. It was a pain. Now we are going back to Directv but they have changed it. I guess if you have had Direcdtv for awhile you still use the old system. Wish we could.
  • There have been many disucssions on here about setting up Slimline dishes. Most installers will try to convince you it's hard to do without a zillion dollar meter and taking a class. They're half right.. at first it IS hard.

By 'new', do you mean going from SD to HD?
  • JoeH, they are selling us a new dish to carry in the motorhome to match the new system. They explained how to set it up, I hope it works. I'm afraid once we get to Florida we won't be able to get it to work. It sounds complicated...we'll see I guess.

One thing you need to be aware of is most receivers that Directv gives new subscribers uses SWM technology while most RV mounted and carryout dishes are multiswitch technology. To use a SWM receiver with a multiswitch dish, you will need to get some additional equipment. If you are going to use a SWM dish and put it on a tripod, no additional equipment needed.
I had a receiver issue, Directv sent me a new one, it was SWM so it was not compatible with the MH mounted dish, I got them to send me an older receiver ( after many conversations and escalations) which works fine at home and in the MH
  • Not sure I know anything about a 'new' system. I'm having no trouble.
