That's one reason why I have never run updates on iPods. If they are working, leave them alone. Likewise, I stick with iTunes until it absolutely won't work any more. Otherwise, there is an update about every second week -- bound to cause a problem eventually.
Back then (during the Ipod Classic days) I wasn't as aware of potential problems as I am today.
