Maybe this is not for you but for your DW, I'd suggest a Sony DSC-HX200V
The video capability on it is excellent (Jmho), If you are at a sports event (or bird watching) and want to be SURE to capture "the moment", you shoot video and then use the Sony program that comes with the camera to freeze frame at any point in the video to get "the shot". No worries.
As far as the DSLR, I carry a Sony A580. I like the double slot feature that allows me to insert two cards and switch between them.
