Help with Texts with no Service

Morning all,
Ok, we are going to be off the grid with no phone service for a couple months in another country. We will have access to wifi periodically. Any suggestions on how to receive and send texts. Example. If we charge something, sometimes they send a text to verify it's you. If I could access those, that would be great.
I really don't care about phone calls. We don't get many and I'm going to change our voicemail to send an email instead of calling or leaving a message.
Any ideas, suggestions or thoughts would be appreciated.
  • A free Google Voice (GV) account makes this an easy process. You can receive/send text messages from any computer or smartphone via WiFi. You can use GV free phone number you select, or port your existing number for a fee.

When I'm working remotely, I don't even use my phone. Make/receive all calls from my PC from GV while working. Outgoing calls see my smartphone number.

Becoming a trend even in business environment. We have Cisco VoIP phones at work, but can use their software app on our PC/laptops to make/receive/transfer/conference calls. Don't even have to touch the handset.

When I am out of a service area, I can use OnStar to connect when I have to. I have the basic plan which gives me 3 gb a month. Works for me.

Onstar only works when you have access to ATT. now the onstar cell phone amp is stronger than a handheld phone so you may get coverage in places ATT doesn't have coverage. There are lots of places that onstar doesn't work, been there done that. Out west it is spotty.
