HOW accessible is FREE WIFI while travelling?

We have a 2 week trip from East Texas to Vegas, then to Utah and back home. Used Millenicom before and am not sold on making the investment in StraightTalk for this trip. So, my question is: How accessible is FREE WIFI on our mostly interstate route we'll be taking. THANKS!

  • ON the interstate there is no free WIFI. Bite the bullet and invest in a no contract hot spot. Otherwise you get to maneuver that Class C in and out of spots you may not want to. Or travel blocks off the interstate to leech on a free wifi at Starbucks, Mickeys etc.
    False economy IMHO.
Lets say you pull into a Walmart or FlyingJ for the night then what do you do for WIFI.
  • Campgrounds - usable 'free' WiFi - 10% might be have it

    McD's & Starbucks - 95%+ have 'free' WiFi

If you stay on interstates for the trip - you will have cell phone service for 90-95% of the trip. And the ability to use a smart phone as a hot spot for 80% or so of the trip.

There are some empty spots in the coverage maps out west, and you will find coverage which is only voice and text - no data service.

If you go off the interstates, coverage gets spotty.

I finally gave up on FREE WIFI and got hooked up with the VERIZON MIFI service plan. I never needed alot of DATA so it fit us just fine. We still have the 3GB DATA PLAN and it works up to five of our WIFI Enabled devices just about anywhere we go using VERIZON TOWERS.

Anywhere my VERIZON CELL PHONE works my VERIZON MIFI stand alone units works as well...

It is all second nature now...

  • Smart phone users are the RVers friend. They have upped the demand for wi-fi so much that it really is almost everywhere.

It least, it is so common that we find it no problem to find.

The worst place to try to use wi-fi is many RV parks. They all have it, but many don't have enough bandwidth capacity to avoid wi-fi gridlock.

We use a wi-fi hotspot on my Android phone to bridge the gaps.
  • Most all fast food stops have free wifi. Some rest stops also.
