How do I Enable 1-click Opening of Files?

Hello again, friends. My laptop is a Toshiba with Windows 8.1 OS. How do I enable opening my files with 1 click as opposed to double clicking? I could do it on my old XP laptop but can't find it on this one. Thanks in advance...
