If you are trying to explain it to grandpa...the system measures the distance from your GPS receiver to multiple satellites of known position. If you are polling enough satellites and you know how far away they are, there is only one position you can be in.

Anyone know what a "elephant cage" was.

Thanks for the great link. As it happens, I did know a lot of that, but have often failed trying to explain it to others. Now, I will give them this link.

His graphics are amazing. I have never seen such a complete explanation ever before.
