I would second LittleBill's recommendation of Ultra VNC.
I am not convince by the above that it is solely Logmein at fault. What shape is your laptop in? Is this the first time it seems unstable? Need more info on what unstable means. If you let the laptop run all night without logmein running, will it reboot itself (crash)? As someone said above, some older laptops may need extra air flow and/or physical cleaning. Some parts cause a hardware fault, which can freeze a computer, when they are loose or over heat.
