I wouldn't advise this at all. Even Apple recommends that you install Anti-Malware software. Even-though, a rudimentary anti-malware app comes standard with Mac OS X, its not designed to be replacement for specialized security protection. Why would Apple go this route, if it believed its OS was invulnerable to Malware? As such, there is really little reason not to have additional protection layers, as there are several "free" highly rated security software apps available, such as Sophos for Mac.
Just remember, every major OS has been exploited with vunerabilities, some going years without being discovered and mitigated. And just because one has not detected hacker activity on their system, doesn't mean it hasn't been exploited. In fact, that's exactly what hackers want. Not to have their activity detected. There are many demonstrations of hacker activity, going undetected on a user machine as examples on the Net.
A wiser assumption these days would be that you've already been hacked at some point? No one type of app is going to prevent all hacker exploits. Best to build layers of protection to make it that much harder to breach your system. Anti-Malware software being only one additional layer.
