4G is a buzzword that indicates the latest generation (4th gen) of technology. The speeds that call themselves "4G" vary so much that our federal gubmint is trying to set a minimum standard--sheesh.
10 mbps is a speed rating of how much data is travelling to you per second. Unfortunately, this is a theoretical top speed that is never achieved. I have VZ 3G and I can stream SD video easily at 800 Kbps (eight tenths of a mbps).
If the salesman is telling you there is special voodoo, it MIGHT be that Hughes is compressing their signal, so that any pictures or video you recieve will not look right, but you'll get them faster using less data. VZ tried this and dropped it years ago.
VZ sets the standard for wireless speed, coverage area and customer service. They are not saints, but they are the best of a disreputable bunch, IMO. If you're having weak signal get a bigger antenna.
