I have a hearing problem!!

We have a small 19" HD TV in our trailer, and it isn't far from where I sit, but the sound seems to go out the back mostly, and with much background noise I can't hear what is going on. If I turn it up it drives my wife and I suppose my neighbors nuts. I am not interested in hearing aids at this time. I got headphones, but when I plug them into the television it cuts out the sound for others. Is there a way to have both sounds going at the same time?
