I "inherited" a low end HP laptop. It only had 4GB of memory, so I upgraded it to 8 GB (which is the max). I also upgraded Win 8 to Win 10. The thing is a DOG and I don't do much more than "surf the web" and email.
If you are on a tight budget, find a 2 or 3 year old used machine and install Linux Mint.
