I guess I am confused - not a difficult thing.
My thought is that the Sprint hotspot is cell phone?
But I guess that some cell carriers are now transmitting Wi-Fi from their cell towers, and if that is the case, then a external Wi-Fi antenna will help get a better and much stronger signal.
I think it was Sprint that bought out "Clear/WiMax" which is a broadcast wifi service, in some of their Metro service areas,
and some of the "virtual carriers" hotspot devices {using Sprint service} are dual band, using the Wi-Max for highspeed in metro areas and 3G for service outside town or wherever the Wi-Max cannot be detected
these work well were the wi-max signal can be used, IN TOWN
not so great, outside of town , the 3g connects but is SLOW by current standards and have a data limit, if exceeeded you must purchase more data to have internet, i don't remember if its 3gig or 5 gig and it could have changed
