Indoor Amplified HDTV Antenna's

These indoor mounted amplified HDTV antenna's go by a number of names like 1byone, Vansky, Lovebay, and others. They advertise their ability to pick up over-the-air signals is much better than other systems. Does anyone have any experience with these types of TV antenna's while on the road?

I have used some over the years back when I had a Sticks and Bricks

    I have the following observations

1: Height is Might.. ANd these are way too close to the ground. Oh if you are in a city with television stations they work fairly well but if you are out in the "Sticks" which is of course where campgrounds live.. You need something with range and HEIGHT is Might. If you wish I have a story.

2: Many RV's are what are called Faraday cages.. If your RV is metal sided, TV signals do not pass through the walls easily (Mine is fiberglass and transparant to TV).

In the RV world NOTHING, and I mean NOTHING made for RV use beats a Winegard Sensar IV with Sensar Pro switch/amplifer/multi function module replacing the standard wall plate.

For better reception you would need a House type antenna and a tower,
  • Despite the claims above, these type of antennas do not work well at all compared to something like a Batwing. I suspect the above poster just happens to be in an area with a very strong incoming signal. I tested the indoor style for Winegard and the only way they did well was on the UHF frequencies (lots of VHF channels out there still) and only if I put the antenna outside the RV or in the window of the RV after determining where the TV towers were located.
If this flat panel antenna is working better than the Batwing in his coach in FL then there is something wrong with the Batwing and needs to be repaired.

"Do they work" is totally subjective. There is no substitute for an obstruction free REAL directional antenna mounted off the roof. These indoor antennas are last resort only.

Well for me it is NOT a last resort. If was my first choice and very happy with results.

    BTW:
When I bought my Florida winter house and was remodeling it I ran a coax cable from the TV inside the house to the inside of the MH and plugged into booster.

Then I bought the inside antenna and mounted it on inside wall. Which is several feet 'lower' than the batwing on MH.

I actually get more channels with the indoor antenna. Mounted exactly across from MH batwing and as mentioned mounted significantly lower.

I too was very surprised of the results. It was purchased as a temporary situation but in light of results I will not be replacing it with an outdoor antenna.

To the OP, yes they do work if you buy the best one available.
  • "Do they work" is totally subjective. There is no substitute for an obstruction free REAL directional antenna mounted off the roof. These indoor antennas are last resort only.
  • YES they DO work! Depends which one you buy.

I just bought an indoor amplified antenna for over the air channels for my winter home in Florida.

    They work GREAT!

I've got the same amount or more of channels that I had in the MH with the roof top antenna.

The key when buying one is to look for the 'distance' in miles on the label and it MUST be amplified. Read the labels carefully to look for 'amplified' and the 'miles'. Some of the cheap ones try and trick you on the outside label.

I bought one with 30 miles distance and amplified. I get over 20 channels and I am real far from the major city they broadcast from. AND the house sits in a valley surrounded by 100 year old cedar trees! Go figure I couldn't get a signal with the MH antenna but do with the indoor antenna.

And for some reason lately each month another channel is added. They just added the ION channel, and movie channel this month. When there are games on I get ALL of them......for FREE! :C

The closer you are to the city where the main broadcasting comes out of the more channels you will receive.

Here is the one I bought. size and thickness of a piece of paper. Black side and white side whichever you want to look at. Plug it in, stick it up and you are all set to go. Mine is on the wall above a window.

AND for me, this was important also. Antenna Made in USA – Derived from US Military Technology.
    Walmart carries it.

AND BTW.....you get a more crisp and clearer picture with over the air channels than with cable/sat!
Because the signal is NOT compressed on over the air reception like it is with cable/sat. :W
  • i have tried the larger of the FLAT RCA versions
worked fine is near town, nothing when away
could not get any signal Quartzite Az

i now have a Bat wing clone, smaller than full size, mounted on the ceiling inside where i can turn it, and it does quite well, much better than the flat 'digital' antenna, still a roof mount would be better
(the original roof location is covered by solar panels)(PO removed the batwing)

the antenna does not know and don't care about digital analog
they only react to wavelength vhf uhf,

the more elements on an antenna, the higher in the air, the better
  • They work for nearby stations, but not even close to a proper roof mounted antenna, and nowhere near what they claim.
  • Snake oil, but if that's all you can do, go for it. If it's an RV, no excuse not to have a nice rooftop antenna.
