Internet access on the road and at home

I currently have Verizon with one smart phone, one stupid phone and a Mifi hotspot. The last two months I have exceeded my 10gig data allowance and had to purchase 4 gig extra. Not sure whats going on there, but that is another problem. My Verizohe bill is close to $250/month. I am looking to reduce my monthly cost and get unlimited data. I would like to stay with Verizon if possible becauee of their coverage.

I can get unlimited data from a local provider for $62 a month but it is limited to my house. I can get a verizon "Straight Talk" Prepaid plan and only pay fo data when I am traveling. The problem is the fine print on the Verizon prepaid plan says "no roaming" ? I am wondering if that means no roaming off of their system or no roaming out of my zip code. They need to know your zipcode before they will sell you a plan. I have been unable to find anyone that really seems to know if I could use it traveling. I want the unlimited plan at home so I can stream movies.

Has anyone out there solved this problem for them selves? Any ideas?
  • I do this:

    1. My phone - an Iphone 5 and I use the Walmart 'Straight Talk' for $45/month. Unlimited talk and text. The first 3 gigs of data are at 3G and then unlimited 2G data. Runs on the Verizon system.

    * You might look at the Straight Talk site about using your current phone, etc.

    2. Millenicom.com MiFi hotspot for Internet and all other WiFi needs. 20 gigs for $90/month. The MiFi supports up to 10 devices. Runs on the Verizon system.

I set my phone to search for my MiFi signal if present and use the Millenicom data plan faster speeds. Since the MiFi is almost always near me, I am getting the faster data speeds almost all the time.

I wanted Verizon coverage too and that's exactly why I picked these 2 sources for my 'electronic' needs.

Been doing this for a year now.

  • I don't think you will be able to find any 4g unlimited internet plans, especially on the VZ network. There are, or used to be, a few unlimited 3G plans on the very limited Sprint network.

We had the Millenicom 20 gig plan ($90/ month) but gave it up because we also wanted to stream movies. At home we went with a Century Link DSL plan for $30/month unlimited data. On the road I use the iPhone as a hotspot with the VZ 4 gig plan. No streaming on that plan. Just basic e-mail and surfing. We can download large files, like movies, using WiFi access when available.

High speed, unlimited on the road internet is about history.

Be interested if anyone has a great idea.

  • Try Mellinicom. Uses verizon infrastructure for $89.99 a month for 20 GB a month.
