Inverter Woes

I have owned 4 inverters. Most were cheapo units from the auto store. 3 of the 4 have "popped".

By "popped" I mean, while sitting there under load, I've heard an electrical zap, and smelled a little smoke, and the unit is dead.

Generally the 4 inverters were 1000 watt units under very little load. For example, recently my 1200 watt inverter died while running a 200 watt DC power supply.

Is this normal? Are there better units than the discount ones at the car parts stores? How about a design that overloads with a reset button rather than tripping an internal fuse?

  • Of course there are better ones than the junk they sell at car parts stores.

Victron, Magnum, Samlex, Tripp Lite, GoPower, in no particular order.

A good inverter will shutdown before it pops.
