for a long time virtually all android phones had replaceable batteries, IMHO a VERY VERY big plus. easy to carry a spare battery. Iphone doesn't. But now more android phones don't have a replaceable battery, so it's draw in those cases.

The iphone USB plug is IMHO more robust than the micro usb on most android, but not as common yet as the micro USB. pick your "poison"

transferring video and audio is easier at least to me on an android.

We've had various android and haven't had any reliability issues with the OS.

virtually all app's we've wanted work on either android or iphone.

while the iphone doesn't have a headphone jack, I've NEVER use the headphone jack on a phone anyway. If I wanted to listen to audio, bluetooth is much more convienent anyway. so lack of a headphone jack is a non issue for me. In fact never have used the headphone jack on my ipods either.... bluetooth again.

now if you also have and apple computer and other periferals, then iphone keeps you consistent.

Otherwise, look at various phones and decide what has the features and price you like best.

And Galaxies phones have the advantage of starting wet firewood during a rain storm.:)

Android doesn’t make phones; it’s an operating system. Samsung, LG, Sony, etc make phones.

Mr. Wizard makes some valid points. I’m married to Apple vis a vis iPads, family, etc but it definitely peeved me off when Apple took off the headphone jack.

I got my first smart phone about a year ago. The only reason I got a USED iPhone was because my wife and (adult) kids have them and I wanted to be sure I could get pictures of my grandchildren.

NEW iPhones are ridiculously especially if you want BUY one so that you one of the many MVNOs like ting, Cricket, StraightTalk, etc.

We have iPhones because DW and I both have MacBooks and the iPhones integrate very well with the laptops. The tablet in the MH is Android as the DashCommand app works better on Android than it does on iOS. I have not had any issues with either Operating System. Android seems to require a bit more attention than iOS, but that might just be because I am more familiar with the Apple "universe". One thing for certain, Android gives you more flexibility when it comes to customization and peripherals.

It is going to be a personal preference. What do your friends or family have? Get them to let you "use" it. Tap the buttons. Look at the settings menu. Is it easy to get to. Check out what apps you'd probably use. iPhone is Apple. Android is Google Pixel, Samsung Galaxy, Motorola, LG, and others. In my opinion there are more free apps on the Android side. I could be wrong on this as I use a Note9.

A smart phone vs flip phone - easier to text, email, Facebook, etc. When I'm out driving for the job in three states, maps and finding a non-chain restaurant among other things that are useful.

Long time Android user, including a flagship Samsung phone.

Some people like to spend big bucks for the latest phone to hit the market, if for no other reason just for bragging rights, and some us view cell phones as nothing more than a utilitarian device.

If you're not the type that needs to spend close to $1,000 for an iPhone just to impress your neighbor, I highly suggest getting a Motorola phone for a couple of hundreds bucks that perform almost as good as some of the flagship phones. We just purchased our second Motorola phone and we are very pleased with both phones.

We purchased an unlocked Motorola G6 at Best Buy while on sale last week for $150. The phone normally retails for $250 but can be found just about everywhere now for $200.

I suggest giving the G6 consideration as you look around. There are plenty of reviews from experts online that give the G6 high marks, especially considering its low price.

I'm using a Samsung from 2013. It still works perfectly.

I have Android OS, wife has Iphone. I ha e apps that apple does not. The apps like Torque, and AutoSilence are great every day apps. Apple has the advantage of easy sharing among their products via Icloud. Unless you absolutely have a need for a smart phone, DONT. They can quickly become a big distraction. Just look at all the kids today, spend more time looking at their phones than actually talking to people. Im seriously consodering going back to a basic phone next time.

Years ago I couldn't decide which one.

So I bought an iPhone 4S and a Galaxy S4. The iPhone was my personal and the S4 was my business phone.

I tested both of them extensively for various things.
MrWizard hit many good points, I'll add my own experience.

I found the iPhone so totally proprietary that it would frustrate me to no end trying to do simple tasks. Apple dictates that you MUST do it their way and only their way. You MUST have iTunes, like it or not. With the iPhone, transferring pictures and such is a real chore. iTunes only.
Built in battery, have to get Apple to change it. Built in memory, can't expand it and so on.

Don't get me wrong, iPhones are an awesome well made device. They are reliable and they work well. It's just that every time you sneeze, Apple wants to wipe your nose for you with iTunes because they think you are incapable and incompetent to do it yourself.

Somewhere along the road I upgraded the 4S to a 5S with the same results. Way too proprietary to be user friendly.

With my Samsung Galaxy S4, I never had a moment of trouble. Like the Apple products, very good quality and reliable.

But with my Android device, everything is so much more user friendly. If you want to transfer pictures, files, anything, just USB cable it to anything, drag and drop or send files any other way to another device, done! Or pop out the micro SD card and plug it in to something else. Simple, easy, no headaches. S4 had a removable battery too. My S7 Edge doesn't. But I can toss my S7 in a swimming pool, dive down and get it with no harm done. That's why the battery is built in because they made it waterproof to a certain point.
Want more memory? Plug in a micro SD card, done!

Bottom line is they are both good devices. Lots of good reasons here to go one way or the other, depending on your own personal needs.

I have a 4th gen iPad too. Getting kinda old but it's an awesome device. 4th gen? 2nd gen? I forget, its from 11 or 12....

Almost 2 years ago, after using both Apple and Android side by side, I divorced Apple for the reasons stated. I bought my S7 Edge and a Galaxy Tab3 tablet.

The iPhone was in perfect condition. I gave it away to an elderly lady who needed a cell phone.
The S4 I just gave away on this forum a couple weeks ago. The iPad still sits here. I use it occasionally because one of my email accounts is still on it.

I personally prefer Android devices, specifically the Samsung Galaxy series. They work seamlessly together and I can bluetooth them to anything with ease, move music, photos, files around in moments without Android dictating to me to load some bloated invasive program like iTunes to harass and haunt me every time I blink.

But here is one for Apple - even at about 6 years old, the battery in my ipad is way better and lasts a lot longer than the ones in my 2 Galaxy devices.

I forgot to mention one of the nice things about buying an unlocked phone is that they don't come with all the bloatware that is added to the phones by the cell phone carriers, some that can't even be removed. The Motorolas we have are almost as pure of an Android system as you can get.
