Not true. My wife and I both have unlocked Android phones, my wife's is a Motorola and mine is a new Google Pixel 3. Neither has any bloatware from manufacturer or carrier. And sharing is just as easy as in Apple world using Google photos, and all the many other Google apps. My wife has an IPad (only because we won it) as well as her Android phone. No problem sharing our photos, documents, etc between devices using Google Apps.

I should mention we also share our stuff seamlessly on my Samsung tablet, Windows 10 laptop and desktop and a second desktop PC at a second location where my older PCs migrate to. It did have Windows 10 but I realized I didn't run any apps there that had to have Win 10 so I installed Zorin OS (Linux) on it and everything shares there via Google apps.

there is only one problem with sharing using google apps/cloud

DATA USEAGE / INTERNET CONNECTION

i prefer manually uploading from my PC what i want to 'cloud'
not every picture and video i take

so i have restricted that function and don't use it much

its fine if its using your stick house internet via wifi

not so great when auto-using your cellular data while traveling and camping

but that is controllable , and not a feature i care to Praise

I have always used android I have had every brand of android just about out there through the years. As far as ease of use and durability best battery life has been my latest phone a Motorola

Either will work fine.

Given that you are coming from a flip phone, I doubt you have any brand loyalty/compatibility to satisfy.

You also likely aren't going to need to worry much about which apps are compatible (all the basic ones have versions for either system).

Big differentiation for your consideration is cost. You can get a base model that will be light years more capable than your flip phone if just buying a low to mid range Android. iphone is always going to be more expensive until you get into the high end android phones...but you don't need high end. You should be able to get a decent phone under $200.

Comparing my Samsung to my kids IPhones is mine doesn't have a broken screen. All three are in Otterboxes and all three have been dropped, mine is actually six months older and no broken screen. Both of my kids, in there 20's, their sreens are cracked, they said they break easy. Just a thought to share.

Try them both if you can and see which you are more comfortable with. Either is good and pretty comparable in what they can do. Wife and I have been on Android for years, but it was simply chosen at the start because it was the less expensive route. I don't have any other Apple devices so there isn't anything to sync with. Both kids have Apples. We haven't had problems with either.

Personal preference rules here. If you are a "tinkerer" and like to customize the phone settings extensively, you're probably better off with an Android phone. If you want the phone to just work, to receive regular OS updates with no hassle and to sync with your iPAD, MacBook, etc., the iPhone may be your best choice.

I admit that I'm not one to sit and customize my phone endlessly, so for ME APPLE rules........

Like others have said, both have their Pros and Cons. I've had both and currently have a Samsung A6. It was half the cost of either an iphone 8 or better and the Samsung Galaxy 9. Putting price aside, for me, the iphone itself is a little simpler to learn while the phones running on the android system offer more freedom and are easier when wanting to get pictures, videos off the phone and onto a computer. (Plug it in, navigate to a folder, cut/paste vs. using a cumbersome itunes program which works much better on a Mac computer than a windows computer). In the end, choose a phone that will work the best with the other stuff you have.
