IPad + cellular?

We are looking to buy an ipad now that we are hitting the road fulltime. I see that there is a "regular" ipad air & am iPad + cellular. What is it, and why do I want it? It doesn't allow phone calls, does it? Confused... We do already own an iphone & laptop. Thanks!
  • I THINK ATT charges $10 to add an ipad to an existing account. Dont remember the data plan but probably 2gb.

I run Navigon in the ipad and iphone and love it. They used to sell GPS in the states and were arguably better than anything else out there at the time, but couldnt compete with Garmin and TomTom. But, the Navigon app is way better than TomTom or Garmin, and I'm a huge fan of Garmin. Navigon was bought by Garmin a few years ago and sofar hasnt ruined them, but they seem to be way more popular in the rest of the world than the big two in the US with iOS maps for almost every country in the world.
  • I went with a Verizon iPad. I am now trying to decide which Nav app to use. Navigon is looking good at this point. I bought a 32g ipad and after using it for a week, I think I might swap it our for a 128g.

I have Navigon; bought it because it allows me to navigate without using any 3G or LTE data. It's really inferior to Apple maps or Google maps. Even when I know I have to use navigon I make sure to search for the address from home on the wifi so I can use google search. The POI database is not that great either.

What I mostly use now is Waze. It uses the google maps but also adds features for traffic, road work, accidents, police radars. You will definitely need a data plan and to keep the device plugged in while using it.
  • Thanks for the comments on Navigon. I will be off the internet while in Canada so I am wanting something that keeps working. I would also like fun info like altitude, direction, distance to destination and traveled and so on. Tomtom seems to get fair reviews too. Shame iTunes doesn't have a return policy. Trying before buying would be much nicer.
  • I use Verizon Wireless for my iPhone and AT&T for my iPad. This way, I can usually count on having service wherever I go because if one is out of range, usually the other is in range.
