iPad air2 to TV

Been posting about getting Direct tv HD on a portable dome. Now read a bunch of reasons this can't happen. While getting a second Direct tv account yesterday, DW also acquired a new iPad air2 with unlimited data. With the Direct tv app, we now have direct on the new iPad. In another recent post it was said you could connect the " phone" to the tv. So will it work to connect the iPad to the tv to watch on a large screen? How? Is it a simple cord from iPad to HDMI on tv?

    Thanks for the additional info.
That totally makes sense. Glad you don't have to pay a subscription fee to use it.

  • There is no need to pay for anything additional with AppleTV. We don't. However, if you already have a cable subscription, there are some benefits.

We have a netflix subscription and use it for that. We also use it to stream internet radio. But the biggest advantage to us is that we have a Mac as our home computer, and the Apple TV streams anything from the Mac to our tv. Our home movies, photos and music library. I will also use it to show the family something from off of my iPad or phone from time to time. If I come across something interesting on the internet, I can put it on the big screen in a matter of seconds, without getting out of my chair.

You can rent/buy movies and subscribe to channels through it, but we never have.
  • I see many people suggest Apple TV for a solution to transmitting content from Apple devices to the TV.

OK, sounds like an idea if it involves a one time purchase of a box for the task.

But isn't there a subsequent cost associated with the Apple TV?
Don't you have to sign up for a subscription where you must pay pay pay on an ongoing basis to use it?
If so this sounds like a bad idea to me. I would like to transmit YouTube videos to my TV for larger viewing screen reasons but I am sure not willing to give them money every month for the ability to do so.

I've heard of Apple TV but know nothing about it. I haven't watched TV for about 37 years. Gave it up like a bad habit.
  • I was going to suggest that. Apple TV is money better spent. It will make the connection wireless, plus much more. You can pick one up used for the same price as the adapter. No brainer.
  • An Apple TV STB can also do this job and much more....
  • As mentioned, the adapter costs about $50 but works well. One thing I learned on mine is that if you download xfinity cable movies, while you can watch them on your Ipad by itself, if you plug in the ACMI adapter to watch them on your TV you will get an error saying not authorized on this device. Haven't had a similar problem with Amazon movies or any other movie source for that matter.

Yes, you just need a Apple Lightning Digital AV adapter. It is roughly $50.

I have one , I can watch all my movies that are on my iPad on the TV... I also downloaded the slingbox app to go along with my actual Slingbox. That allows me to watch my cable from home on my iPad - onto any tv I plug into...
