Just ordered a satellite

One of the options was a WiFi adapter. I didn't order it because I wasn't sure what it was for and when I asked, the lady I spoke with didn't sound as if she knew either.
Our only source of WiFi would be either the campground or our hotspot provided by our phone carrier.
Could someone explain what I can use it for if I bought it? Thanks so much.
Thanks in advance.
  • If you are considering getting a WiFi adapter for your Wally receiver there is only one USB plugin adapter that will work. That Wally WiFi adapter includes the programming that makes it work with the Wally. Other generic WiFi adapters used on PC's will not work with the Wally (I've tried them). I don't know if an generic WiFi adapter will work with other satellite receivers.

Next question is why limit your WiFi access through DISH and the Wally. The current Apps supplied by Dish for your Wally will give you easy access to Netflix only (which requires it own subscription by the way). I recommend you get a Roku or Amazon Fire which gives you access to all streaming channels like Netflix, YouTube, Amazon Prime, NBC, ABC, CBS, etc. The Roku or Fire plugs directly into your tv (check your ports before ordering) so you don't need to power-up your DISH service to watch tv.

and I just want to know what it does?

Now I know exactly what you are talking about.. This is like my Linksys WGA54G it is a WI-Fi to LAN adapter that lets you connect the Sat Receiver to your Wi-Fi network without the need to run cables.

WHY: Well modern sat (and cable) receivers can also stream netflix. Hulu and even be programmed remotely to record (If they have a DVR function) shows.. My vintage DVR can .. or rather could.. do that as well back before they ended support. May offer some other features a well like file sharing via LAN (mine do)
  • They're gone.

If you're sensitive to attempts at humor and sarcasm, it's probably best to use google and look things up yourself. So much information is readily available, there, and on here if you try searching. And.. why are you talking to people on the phone for technical information?

The more information you know already, the more descriptive your question can be.
  • Pretty thin skinned for someone who posted a question no one could answer unless they returned and clarified what they had and what they wanted to do.
They didn't buy a satellite (that billion dollar thing in the sky) and it was impossible to speculate whether he bought an antenna, receiver or both.
Sorry to see you go but there was help available if you had taken some time to read the initial responses and given us the information needed to answer your question.
