Lap Top Issues

Sometimes my HP15 lap top has a very dark screen after restarting. I can barely see the line for my password .I am unable to enter it because it is too dark for my cursor to allow me to enter my password.

Just started yesterday. If I manually shut it down and then restart it usually boots up normally. A couple of times it came back with the dark screen. Then I shut it down again.

Any ideas?

  • Thanks Dirt. Will not attempt a repair. I have another lap top so will probably go to something similar to but not an IPad. Can't remember what the others are called so you know how unsavvy I am.

Sounds like your backlight is going out. For example, you can take a look at this link on determining if that is the problem.

It appears that you may be correct. A little update: When the screen goes to sleep and is then awaken it will be dark. Twice I was able to use the cursor to restart. I was able to do that with great difficulty and the light has to be just right. On a restart or manually restarting the screen will come back to it's correct resolution. I have changed the timing to where the screen plays pictures all the time. Doing so and the screen does not go dark.

If indeed it is your backlight, the day will come when it will stop working altogether. If you are tech savvy, you can replace it yourself inexpensively. There are a number of how-to's on YouTube. I have a replaced a few and my first attempts went horribly awry. Lol. You always could attach an external monitor and still use your laptop that way. Just plug it in and press the (fn)f4 key to toggle between laptop and external monitor.

  • You could try increasing the brightness by using the FN key and look on the top of keyboard for a icon that looks like a ( * ) on the F9 key. Holding down the FN and tapping the F9 key should do it.

  • I would do a complete "RESTART" from your preferences. Be sure and do a complete backup before you do the Restart.
  • Might be a power management setting. Are you plugged in or running off battery only. If on battery only, the battery is low, causing the screen to attempt to save energy. If it does this when plugged in, not sure what could be causing it to happen.
